Three main points today.
1. I fell on my ass in front of a group of Italian/Slovene Students at the university in Koper. That was fun, since it was raining and everyone smelt like cigarette smoke.
2. In the square where the main church is and the watch tower resides, I saw a statue on an important building. This statute had various things, which I listed thusly: “Look! I see a golden sword….and a golden crown….and golden balls?” I think this came out wrong, because Shawn, the female teacher, laughed out loud kind of weirdly along with those around us.
3. On this cold, slightly windy, wet, very chilly day, some people in the group decided to go swimming in the waters around us. That didn’t last for long.
Besides all that, a good day. We had mist in the morning, and it looked like Stephen King's "The Mist".
After about four hours of lectures, one particularly long one, we went to walk around Koper. Koper is an island that is being modernized pretty fast. The older part of the city is in the middle, with a lot of streets for shopping. The salt beds are gone and are built over with new buildings. I found it unfortunate how the modern world seemed to be imposing on the homes of the past. Some of the mixture worked, but not really. Its kind of assimilation of the old into the modern world. And that’s one way to lose a history.
When traveling to Koper, not to far, our host guide talked for the entire hour. a lot of people wanted to sleep, and I think they did…. The border really wasn’t that definite, which showed how the physical lines are going, but the mental ones are still prominent.
We ate in this really nice restaurant. I kid you not, the lasagna had nice thin layers of noodle that looked like a brick in the end and tasted delicious! I admit struggling near the end eating it, since I wanted to eat it all. I’ve been doing that a lot really. Good food is so hard to waste. Didn’t really like the desert too much.
I find myself liking this place more and more because of some similarities in culture to the Bahamian culture.
Near the end of the day we had a nice sunset. So happy.
*When traveling, be aware that if you don’t know their language they most likely know yours if their business requires multiple languages in order to work properly.
